Local Immigration Partnerships
Local Immigration Partnerships (LIPs) are regional, municipal, or neighbourhood coalitions, funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, and designed to strengthen local capacity to attract newcomers and improve integration outcomes, as indicated by enhanced economic, social, political, and civic participation. LIPs operate through formal agreements that establish broad- based partnership councils. These Councils are charged with developing and implementing strategies and action plans aimed at producing more welcoming communities.
LIP coalitions involve diverse stakeholders including, among others, immigrant and mainstream service providers; municipalities; federal and provincial agencies; employer associations; health rganizations; ethno-cultural and religious groups; school boards, and academic institutions. As such, LIPs are important focal points for increasing provincial and municipal engagement and promoting strategic alignments and better coordination among service providers and other institutions.
This link offers one-stop access to key LIP documents and contact information. In addition, the Best Practices Corner – Community Toolkits and Resources – contains toolkits and information for the development of LIP councils, strategies and action plans; and the library houses reports, conference presentations and other material that relate to the LIPs.
LIPs are currently active throughout Ontario and are just getting underway in the Prairies and Atlantic Canada. Citizenship and Immigration Canada has announced its intention to roll out the LIP program to other regions in the course of 2012-13 and 2013-14. Information will be added to the regional fields on this website as it becomes available.
